Walking North

Digital Collage

Summer 2017

This digital collage project explores the idea of virtual travel in each of America's fifty states. Curiosity about lesser-known areas of the country inspired the project; I imagined, for example, a typical street in a small town in Nebraska, and then I used Google Maps to realize my vision.

At the time, I struggled with a disorder called agoraphobia. Agoraphobia made it difficult for me to leave my home, let alone live a normal life. I lived in New York City, in Washington Heights, a neighborhood with which I was very familiar. Yet walking just one block away from my house incited intense fear that overpowered my body and mind. Despite this, my curiosity about other areas did not decrease. It coalesced in a strange way with my feeling of captivity, leading me to resort to the Internet to explore unknown lands.
